Wool Rugs
Wool is the fibre to choose when a rug has to keep its shape. Each strand is crimped like a spring, so it bounces back after furniture and footfall. Our wool rugs are hand-knotted or hand-woven by artisans in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and shipped straight to you with no middlemen.

How a wool rug is made
Wool is spun, then worked one of two ways in this collection. Hand-knotted rugs have every knot tied by hand around the warp on a loom. Hand-woven rugs pass weft over and under the warp to make a flat rug with no pile. Each listing names the construction.

Hand-knotted or hand-woven: which wool rug is which?
Hand-knotted: every knot is tied by hand around the warp threads on a loom, the slowest method. The pile is knotted in, not glued. Hand-woven: weft threads pass over and under the warp to make a flat rug, with the pattern on both faces. You may see hand-tufted wool rugs elsewhere, where yarn is punched through a stretched backing with a hand-held gun. None are in this collection, and our guide below compares all three.
Is a wool rug hard-wearing enough for daily use?
For most rooms, yes. Wool's crimped fibre springs back after footfall, so the pile stays upright in living rooms and bedrooms. For a hallway, look at a flat-woven wool kilim runner. With no pile to flatten, it takes shoes and daily walking.
What size wool rug do I need?
Wool area rugs are often listed in feet. Here is what the common sizes measure in cm. Leave about 30 cm of bare floor around the edge. Every listing gives its exact size in cm.
| Size (cm) | Size (ft) | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| 90 x 150 | 3 x 5 | Doorway, bedside |
| 120 x 185 | 4 x 6 | Entrance, small bedroom |
| 152 x 213 | 5 x 7 | Reading corner, under a coffee table |
| 150 x 250 | 5 x 8 | Long narrow room, bedroom |
| 185 x 275 | 6 x 9 | Bedroom, small dining table |
| 244 x 305 | 8 x 10 | Sofa and chairs sitting on or partly on the rug |
| 274 x 366 (about 275 x 365) | 9 x 12 | Large living room, open-plan dining area |

Frequently asked questions
What size is a 9x12, 8x10 or 5x7 wool rug in cm?
A 9x12 ft rug is 274 x 366 cm (about 275 x 365 cm), an 8x10 is 244 x 305 cm, and a 5x7 is 152 x 213 cm. Every listing shows its exact size in cm, and we can make wool rugs to your size.
What is the difference between a hand-knotted, hand-tufted and hand-woven wool rug?
Hand-knotted rugs are tied knot by knot on a loom. Hand-tufted rugs have yarn punched through a backing with a hand-held gun. Hand-woven rugs are flat, with no pile, made by weaving weft across warp. This collection holds hand-knotted and hand-woven rugs.
Can I get a wool rug custom made to size or colour?
Yes. We send a free CAD preview of your size and colours before we make it, with a wide range of dye colours to choose from or a colour code we match.
Where can I buy a tribal wool rug?
Tribal-pattern wool rugs are in this collection, hand-knotted or hand-woven, with the construction named on each listing. Browse the Tribal Rugs collection to see them on their own.
Are your wool rugs made in Pakistan?
Our wool rugs are made by artisans in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and each listing names where it was made. We buy from the artisan and ship to you with no UK middleman. Imaco Rugs is a Label STEP dealer, listed on the Label STEP site.
