What is a modern rug?
A modern rug uses a plain, geometric or abstract design in place of a medallion or a floral pattern. The rugs on this page are hand-knotted wool pieces and flatweaves in textured, Berber-style and modern Chobi designs.
What is a Berber-style rug?
Berber-style rugs follow the Moroccan weaving tradition: simple diamond or line patterns, usually on a cream or neutral ground, with a thick pile. Most of the hand-knotted rugs here are in this style.
What is a modern Chobi rug?
Chobi is a hand-knotted rug style with a soft pile and a muted palette. The modern Chobi rugs here keep that pile and use plain or abstract designs instead of the classic floral ones.
| Size (cm) | Size (ft) | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| 156-199 x 95-147 | 5'1" x 3'1" to 6'6" x 4'10" | Hallway, bedside, in front of an armchair |
| 244-250 x 153-171 | 8' x 5' to 8'2" x 5'7" | Small living room, home office, foot of a bed |
| 269-278 x 186-199 | 8'10" x 6'1" to 9'1" x 6'6" | Living room, in front of a sofa |
| 278-315 x 244-262 | 9'1" x 8' to 10'4" x 8'7" | Large living room, under a dining table |
| 366 x 283 | 12' x 9'3" | Open-plan room, large lounge |
Hand-knotted or flatweave
In a hand-knotted rug each knot is tied by hand around the warp, and the knots form the pile. A flatweave has no pile: the threads pass over and under each other, so the surface is flat and thin.
One rug per listing
Most listings show one rug in stock. Each page gives its exact size in cm, and a sold rug can stay on the page for reference.
Frequently asked questions
What is trending in rugs right now?
We do not track trends outside our own store, so we can only describe our range. The modern styles in stock here are textured and Berber-style hand-knotted rugs, modern Chobi rugs, and flatweaves. Each listing shows its exact size in cm.
What is the best modern rug?
It depends on the room. Pick the size first: a rug should be large enough for at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs to sit on it. Then pick the construction. Hand-knotted rugs have a soft, thick pile underfoot. Flatweaves are thin and flat, so they sit under doors and furniture more easily.
What rugs are currently in fashion?
Modern rugs use plain, geometric or abstract designs instead of a medallion or floral pattern. In our range that means Berber-style diamond and line patterns, textured hand-knotted pieces, and flatweaves. Browse the in-stock rugs on this page to see what we have now.
What are some good quality modern rugs?
Check three things on any listing: how it is made, what fibre it is made of, and its exact size in cm. In a hand-knotted rug each knot is tied by hand, and the pattern shows on the back as well as the front. If a listing does not say one of the three, ask us before you buy. We are a Label STEP listed dealer.
