Where to Put a Kilim: Bedroom, Kitchen and Dining Room

A kilim is thin, flat and woven in one piece, which makes it easy to place. It lies flat under a bed, a table or a run of kitchen units, and it can be vacuumed on both faces. This guide covers three rooms people ask about most: the bedroom, the kitchen and the dining room.

The short answer

In a bedroom, choose a kilim large enough to sit under the bed with the edges clear of the frame. In a kitchen, use a runner along the units and a pad underneath. In a dining room, size the kilim so the chairs stay on it when pulled out. Browse our kilim rugs, the Afghanistan kilim rugs in every size, or all flatweave rugs.

Bedroom

The usual layout is a rug that sits under the lower two thirds of the bed, with a border of rug showing at the foot and sides. A 185 x 275 cm (6 x 9 ft) kilim suits a bedroom, and smaller rugs work as bedside pieces: 90 x 150 cm (3 x 5 ft) fits a bedside. Because a kilim is thin, the bed frame sits on it without lifting. Leave about 30 cm of bare floor around the edge of the rug.

Kitchen

A kilim runner along the units and the sink takes shoes and daily walking, and a flatweave is easy to shake out and vacuum. Choose a runner and measure as you would for a hall: our guide on how to measure a kilim runner for a hall or stairs works for any long, narrow floor. Use a non-slip pad, and blot spills at once. Do not put a rug where it will sit wet.

Dining room

The rule is that the chairs should stay on the rug when pulled out. Add about 60 cm to each side of the table, then choose the closest size. A 245 x 305 cm (8 x 10 ft) kilim suits a sofa and chairs in a living room and a dining table for six. A kilim is thin, so chairs slide on it easily, and a pad helps it stay flat.

Looking after it

Vacuum both faces, rotate the rug every few months and keep it out of long direct sun. The full routine is in how to clean a kilim rug, and what a kilim rug is explains the weave.
