How to Protect a Wool Rug from Stains

Place the rug away from the worst spill zones, blot anything that lands on it at once, and vacuum often so dirt does not grind in. Wool's natural lanolin slows a spill soaking in, so a quick response works. Wool buys you time, not immunity, so placement and speed do most of the work. For what to do after a spill, see our guide on how to clean a wool rug.

Does wool resist stains naturally?

Partly. Each wool fibre is coated in lanolin, a natural wax, and the crimped fibre holds a drop on the surface for a short time before it soaks in. That gives you minutes to blot, not hours.

It does not stop a stain taking hold. Red wine, coffee and mud will mark a wool rug that sits wet. Dark colours and busy patterns hide a mark better than plain cream, which is worth knowing before you choose.

Where should a wool rug go to avoid stains?

Keep it out of the places where things get dropped or tracked in. Under a dining table, flatweave rugs are easier to lift crumbs from than a deep pile. At a back door or in a hall, runner rugs take the mud and leave the main room clear.

Avoid putting a pale rug right where drinks are carried, such as the path from kitchen to sofa. Move a plant pot or a coffee table rather than letting it sit over the rug, as a leaking saucer is a common cause of a mark.

Do rug pads help?

A pad stops a rug sliding and lets air move under it. It does not stop a spill passing through, so lift a corner and check the floor if something has gone over. Choose a pad a little smaller than the rug, so it does not show at the edges.

Are stain-protection sprays safe on wool?

Some are, and some change the feel or the colour of the pile. If you want to use one, choose a product that says on the label it is made for wool, read the instructions, and test a hidden corner first. Let it dry fully before you put furniture back.

A spray does not make a rug immune to marks. It buys a little more time, and you still need to blot at once.

What to keep near the rug

Keep a few clean white cloths and a bowl of cold water where you can reach them. White cloths show you what is lifting, and cold water is the only water to use on wool. Hot water can set a stain and shrink the fibre.

If it does stain

Press a clean, dry cloth on the spill and lift, working from the edge in. Do not rub. Dab with a cloth dampened in cold water and blot dry. For a stain that stays, ask a professional rug cleaner. The full steps are in the cleaning guide above.

Questions we get asked

Are dark rugs better for homes with children and pets?

A dark or patterned rug hides a mark better than a plain pale one, so it suits a busy home. It still needs the same care. Blot spills at once and vacuum weekly, as wool of any colour holds on to dirt if it is left.

Should I treat a new wool rug with a spray?

You do not have to. Wool already slows a spill soaking in. If you choose a spray, pick one made for wool, test a hidden corner and follow the label. It will not stop every mark, so blotting quickly is still what counts.

Is a wool rug a good idea in a dining room?

Yes, with the right construction. A flatweave has no pile for crumbs to settle into and is easier to lift dirt from. Put a rug pad under it so chairs slide without dragging, and choose a size large enough for the chairs to stay on it.

Do wool rugs stain easily?

Not as easily as people fear, if you act quickly. Lanolin and the crimped fibre slow a spill soaking in. A spill left for hours is a different matter, and some, such as wine and coffee, can leave a mark even when blotted.

How soon do I need to blot a spill on wool?

As soon as you see it. Lanolin and the crimped fibre give you a few minutes before a liquid soaks in, and every minute after that makes it harder to lift. Press a clean cloth on it, work from the edge in and do not rub.
