What is a kilim rug?

A kilim is a flat-woven rug, meaning it does not have a knotted pile like traditional plush carpets. Instead of knotting strands of wool onto a foundation, the artisan tightly interweaves the warp (vertical) and weft (horizontal) strands to create a flat, lightweight, and durable textile.

How to clean a kilim rug?

Maintenance is relatively simple, but care is required to preserve the natural fibers:

Regular Care: Vacuum regularly on a low suction setting. Avoid using the beater bar (rotating brush), as this can snag the flat-weave structure.
Spills: Blot liquids immediately with a clean, white cloth. Do not rub or scrub, as this pushes the stain deeper into the wool.
Deep Cleaning: For a thorough refresh, we recommend a professional hand-wash by a rug specialist rather than using harsh carpet shampoos or machines.

Are kilim rugs soft?

Kilims offer a different tactile experience than pile rugs. Because they lack a plush "tuft," they feel firmer and more textured underfoot. However, because we prioritize high-quality natural wools, they are not scratchy.

Expectation: Think of them as having a crisp, natural, and grounded feel rather than a "squishy" feel. Over time, the wool fibers will naturally relax and soften further with use.

Can I dry clean a kilim rug?

Technically, yes, but we generally advise against standard dry cleaning for high-quality handmade rugs. The harsh chemicals used in conventional dry cleaning can sometimes damage natural lanolin in the wool or alter the dyes.

Our Advice: If you need a deep clean, seek out a cleaner who specializes in Oriental or artisan rug cleaning. They will understand how to wash the rug gently to preserve its structural integrity and colors.

Are kilim rugs durable?

Extremely. In fact, kilims are often the go-to choice for high-traffic areas like kitchens, hallways, and entryways. Their tight, flat weave structure leaves fewer places for dust and dirt to hide compared to deep-pile rugs.

Bonus: Most kilim rugs are reversible. If one side begins to show wear or fades slightly from sunlight, you can simply flip it over to reveal a fresh face, effectively doubling the life of your rug.
