What is a traditional rug?
A traditional rug uses a classic design: a central medallion, an all-over pattern or rows of repeating motifs, knotted by hand in a wool pile. The rugs on this page are Chobi, Ziegler, Oushak and Bokhara designs.
What is a Chobi Ziegler rug?
Chobi is a hand-knotted rug style with a soft pile and a muted palette. Ziegler is the design family within it, with open, all-over floral patterns. The name comes from Ziegler & Co, a Manchester firm that commissioned rugs in Persia in the 1800s.
What is a Bokhara rug?
A Bokhara rug repeats rows of gul motifs, usually on a deep red field. The name comes from the trading city of Bukhara. Our Bokhara is listed as a Pakistani Bokhara, 289 × 207 cm.
| Size (cm) | Size (ft) | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| 289-298 x 182-207 | 9'6" x 6' to 9'9" x 6'9" | Living room, in front of a sofa |
| 313-320 x 243-249 | 10'3" x 8' to 10'6" x 8'2" | Large living room, under a dining table |
Hand-knotted, not printed
Each knot is tied by hand around the warp, and the knots form the pile. The pattern is part of the rug, so it shows on the back as well as the front.
Most are one of one
Most traditional rugs here are single pieces. When one sells, it is not restocked, and a sold rug can stay on the page for reference.
Frequently asked questions
Are traditional rugs hand-knotted or hand-woven?
The rugs on this page are hand-knotted. Each knot is tied by hand around the warp, and the knots make the pile. Hand-woven usually means flatwoven with no pile, like a kilim.
Are Chobi rugs from Pakistan or Afghanistan?
Chobi is a style, not a country. Rugs in this style are knotted in both Afghanistan and Pakistan. Where we know where a rug was knotted, the title or description says so. If a listing does not, ask us before you buy.
What size traditional rug do I need?
In a living room, choose a rug large enough for at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs to sit on it. Our in-stock pieces run from about 289 × 207 cm to 320 × 243 cm. Under a dining table, leave about 60 cm of rug beyond each table edge so the chairs stay on it when pulled out.
