Why there is only one
Zemistan means winter in Dari, a language spoken in Maimana, the Afghan town where this kilim was woven on our own looms. It took two to four months, in hand-spun wool coloured with root and bark in small batches, so the soft bands of colour, called abrash, are part of the weave. Each kilim is woven once, and no other kilim has this exact pattern. When it sells, the listing stays up marked Sold. We do not restock it.
Woven in Maimana, Afghanistan. Washed, sun-dried and finished in Pakistan, and shipped to you from there. Wool warp and weft, no pile, about 3 to 5 mm thick.

How it was made.
The wool.
Spun by hand and dyed with plants in small batches. The soft bands of colour, called abrash, come from the batches. They are not a fault.
The weave.
Flatwoven, not knotted. Wool pulled tight across a wool warp, with no pile and no glue, so both faces are finished.
The finish.
Washed once it comes off the loom, then dried in the sun.

There are no knots at all — the coloured wool weft is woven directly through the cotton warp, packed tight to hide it completely. Flat on both sides, so it's reversible. No two are ever identical.

We cut out the layers that inflate rug prices elsewhere — no agent, no importer, no showroom margin. You're buying direct from the loom, the same rug a UK retailer would mark up three or four times before it reached their showroom floor. Label STEP audits confirm that saving isn't coming out of the weaver's wage.

Vacuum on a standard setting — no pile to protect, so the beater bar is fine. Blot spills straight away with a clean cloth, never rub. Being reversible, you can flip it for even wear instead of rotating. For a deep clean, use a specialist handmade-rug cleaner.
