Hand Knotted Rugs
Hand-knotted rugs, from 156 x 95 cm to 366 x 283 cm. Each knot is tied by hand, so the back shows the same pattern as the front. Every listing shows its exact size in cm, and when a rug sells it is not restocked.

What is a hand-knotted rug?
A hand-knotted rug is made by tying each knot by hand around the warp threads on a loom. The knots form the pile, and the pattern is built knot by knot.
How to tell a rug is hand-knotted
Turn the rug over. A hand-knotted rug shows the knots on the back, and the pattern reads the same as the front. Small irregularities in the knots are normal, because each one is tied by hand.
Choosing a size
Leave about 30 cm of bare floor around the edge of the rug. In a living room, the front legs of the sofa and chairs should sit on the rug. Every listing gives its exact size in cm.
| Size (cm) | Size (ft) | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| 90 x 150 | 3 x 5 | Hall, bedside |
| 120 x 185 | 4 x 6 | Reading corner, small bedroom |
| 150 x 215 | 5 x 7 | Bedroom, home office |
| 150 x 250 | 5 x 8 | Narrow living room, long bedroom |
| 185 x 275 | 6 x 9 | Living room with a sofa |
| 200 x 300 | 7 x 10 | Large living room |
| 245 x 305 | 8 x 10 | Large living room |
| 275 x 365 | 9 x 12 | Largest rooms |
One rug, not a run
Each listing is one rug. When it sells, it is not restocked. A repeat needs a fresh commission and a new listing, and it will not match exactly.
Frequently asked questions
What is a hand-knotted rug?
A hand-knotted rug is made by tying each knot by hand around the warp threads on a loom. The knots form the pile, and the pattern is built knot by knot.
What is the difference between hand-knotted and hand-tufted rugs?
A hand-knotted rug has every knot tied on a loom. A hand-tufted rug has yarn pushed through a backing with a tufting tool, then fixed with a backing layer. You can see the difference on the back: knots on a hand-knotted rug, a covered backing on a tufted one.
What is the difference between hand-knotted and hand-woven rugs?
A hand-knotted rug has a pile made of tied knots. A hand-woven flatweave, such as a kilim, has no pile: the weft passes over and under the warp to build the pattern.
How can I tell if a rug is hand-knotted?
Turn it over. On a hand-knotted rug you can see the knots on the back, and the pattern reads the same as the front. Small irregularities are normal.
Can I get a hand-knotted rug made to my size?
Each rug in this collection is one finished piece, so its size is fixed. For a rug made to your size and colours, see our Custom Rugs collection, which starts with a free CAD preview.
