About this collection

What is a handmade runner rug?

A runner is a long, narrow rug made for halls, landings, kitchens and the space beside a bed. Every runner on this page is handwoven, and most are flatwoven kilims with no pile.

Why a flatweave runner for a hall?

A flatweave has no pile, so it lies flat. Doors can swing over it, it is easy to lift for cleaning, and the pattern shows on both faces so you can turn it over to spread the wear.

Where do these runners come from?

The named runners, such as Abr-e Naw and Koh-e Nur, are Maimana kilims, named for Maimana in northern Afghanistan. Each listing gives the weave and the exact size, so check the product page for the origin of a specific piece.

One of one, then gone

Most runners here are single pieces. When one sells it stays listed as Sold and is not restocked, so use the length filter to see which sizes are in stock today.

Frequently asked questions

What is a kilim runner?

A kilim runner is a long, narrow flatwoven rug. The weft passes over and under the warp, so there is no pile and the design shows on both sides. It lies flat, which suits halls, landings and kitchens.

What is the difference between a kilim runner and a hand-knotted runner?

A kilim runner is flatwoven, so it has no pile and the pattern shows on both sides. A hand-knotted runner has knots tied to the warp that form a pile. Kilims are thinner and lie flatter, which is why they suit halls.

Is each handmade runner one of a kind?

Most are. Each is woven as a single piece, and when one sells it stays listed as Sold and is not restocked.

Can I see runners that have sold?

Yes. This page keeps sold pieces listed, so you can see the full range of sizes and patterns we have woven. To see only runners in stock now, use the Runner Rugs page.

Do I need a rug pad under a flatweave?

We recommend one. A flatweave is thin, so on a hard floor it can slide and ruck up at the corners. A non-slip pad holds it flat, cushions it and reduces wear on the underside. Pick a pad slightly smaller than the rug.
