What is a Suzani rug?
Suzani comes from the Persian word suzan, meaning needle. It began as embroidered cloth, with the pattern stitched by hand. A Suzani rug carries that embroidery on a kilim, a flat rug with no pile.
How ours are made
Most rugs here are embroidered kilims. The embroidery is done by hand, so no two patterns match exactly. A few pieces are hand-knotted instead, and their titles say so, for example Suzani Modern Chobi.
Choosing a size
Leave about 30 cm of bare floor around the edge of the rug. In a living room, the front legs of the sofa and chairs should sit on the rug. Every listing gives its exact size in cm.
| Size (cm) | Size (ft) | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| 60 x 90 | 2 x 3 | Doorway, bedside |
| 100 x 150 | 3 x 5 | Hall, beside a bed |
| 120 x 180 | 4 x 6 | Reading corner, small bedroom |
| 150 x 215 | 5 x 7 | Bedroom, home office |
| 160 x 240 | 5 x 8 | Narrow living room |
| 200 x 300 | 7 x 10 | Large living room |
| 60 x 185 runner | 2 x 6 | Hall, landing |
| 80 x 240 runner | 2.5 x 8 | Long hall |
Runners and small sizes
Suzani runners here include 60 x 185 cm and 80 x 240 cm, for halls and landings. Small rugs from 60 x 90 cm suit a doorway or a bedside. The embroidery sits on one face, so a Suzani goes down pattern up.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Suzani rug?
Suzani comes from the Persian word suzan, meaning needle. It began as embroidered cloth. A Suzani rug carries hand embroidery, usually floral, on a kilim.
What is the difference between a Suzani and a kilim?
A kilim is a flatweave: the pattern is woven in, and there is no pile. A Suzani is embroidery: the pattern is stitched on. Our Suzani rugs combine both, with embroidery on a kilim.
Are Suzani rugs handmade?
The embroidery on our Suzani kilims is done by hand. A few pieces here are hand-knotted instead, and their titles say so.
What sizes do Suzani rugs come in?
From 60 x 90 cm (2 x 3 ft) to about 200 x 300 cm (7 x 10 ft), plus runners such as 60 x 185 cm and 80 x 240 cm. Every listing shows its exact size in cm.
Will a sold Suzani come back?
Each listing is one rug. When it sells, that listing closes. A rug of the same size may be listed separately, and it will not match exactly.
