Rug Sizes in cm: 9x12, 8x10 and 5x7 Explained

A 9x12 ft rug is 275 x 365 cm as we list it. Below are the other common sizes in cm, which size suits which room, and how to measure so you order the right one.

Rug sizes in feet and cm

Rug sizes are often written in feet, a habit from the US market. We list every rug in cm first, with the feet size beside it, so the figures below match our size collections.

Size (ft) Listed size (cm) Best for Browse
3 x 5 90 x 150 Doorway, bedside 3x5 rugs
4 x 6 120 x 185 Entrance, small bedroom 4x6 rugs
5 x 7 150 x 215 Reading corner, under a coffee table 5x7 rugs
5 x 8 150 x 250 Long narrow room, bedroom 5x8 rugs
6 x 9 185 x 275 Bedroom, small dining table 6x9 rugs
8 x 10 245 x 305 Sofa and chairs, dining table for six 8x10 rugs
9 x 12 275 x 365 Large or open-plan living room 9x12 rugs
10 x 14 305 x 425 Very large rooms, super king bed 10x14 rugs

You may notice that the exact conversion of 9x12 ft is 274 x 366 cm. Our size collections use rounded sizes, so a rug can differ from the table by a few cm. Every product page gives that rug's own size in cm, so check it there before you order.

Which size for which room

Living room

The rug should be large enough for the front legs of your sofa and chairs to sit on it, which ties the seating together. An 8x10 (245 x 305 cm) suits most sofa and armchair groups, and a 9x12 (275 x 365 cm) suits a large or open-plan room. A 5x7 (150 x 215 cm) is too small to hold a full seating group, but it works under a coffee table or in a reading corner.

Bedroom

Let the rug extend about 60 cm past each side of the bed, which is mattress width plus 120 cm. A UK double is 135 cm wide, so it needs about 255 cm. A king is 150 cm wide, so about 270 cm, which a 9x12 covers. A super king is 180 cm wide, so about 300 cm, which a 10x14 (305 cm wide) covers.

Dining room

Pulled-out chairs should stay on the rug, so take the table size and add about 60 cm on every side. A 180 x 90 cm table needs a rug of about 300 x 210 cm, and an 8x10 (245 x 305 cm) fits it.

Hall and stairs

Runners are listed by length. Measure the floor you want to cover and leave a hand's width or two of bare floor at each end and along each side. Our Afghan kilim runners are listed from 5 ft (150 cm) to 16 ft (500 cm), including 6 ft (185 cm), 8 ft (250 cm) and 10 ft (305 cm). Browse runners.

How to measure your room

Decide where the rug will go and where the furniture will sit on it. Lay masking tape on the floor to mark the outline of the size you are considering, then walk around it. Check that doors open clear and that the tape leaves about 30 cm of bare floor to the walls in a living room. Move the tape until it feels right, measure it in cm, and choose the listed size closest to that. Measure from the floor rather than the wall, because skirting boards and radiators change how much room you really have.

Wool rugs in these sizes

Wool rugs are often listed in feet, most often as 9x12, 8x10 and 5x7, and the table above applies to them. Browse wool rugs, or read how to choose a wool rug.
