Hand-knotted, hand-tufted or hand-woven: which wool rug is which?

Hand-knotted wool rugs: every knot is tied by hand around the warp threads on a loom. It is the slowest method. The pile is knotted in, not glued.
Hand-tufted wool rugs: wool yarn is punched through a stretched backing with a hand-held tufting gun, then the back is sealed. It is quicker to make than knotting.
Hand-woven wool rugs: weft threads pass over and under the warp to make a flat rug with no pile, the way a kilim is made. The pattern shows on both faces.

Is a wool rug hard-wearing enough for daily use?

For most rooms, yes. Wool's crimped fibre springs back after footfall, so the pile stays upright in living rooms and bedrooms. For a hallway, look at a flat-woven wool kilim runner. How do I care for a wool rug?

Vacuum weekly. On hand-knotted rugs, switch the beater bar off. Blot spills from the edge inward, and do not rub or soak. Rotate the rug every six months so wear spreads evenly. A new wool rug sheds loose fibre for the first few weeks. That is normal and it settles.
